It’s VBS week… Enough said.
by Kerry
Okay, so not really enough said. I didn’t mean it when I said that in the “Title” – {but I did mean it, and you know what I mean}.
Exhaustion. Sheer exhaustion.
What is it about these 5 short mornings that produce soooooo much exhaustion?? And I mean the drop dead kind of tired where you can’t function for the rest of the day. Oh my mercy.
My fridge will be covered in crafts by the multiples of 4 all. week. long. :D
(By that I meant all-summer-long and possibly into the fall season.)
So last week my kids attended VBS at another nearby church. I was literally singing the Hallelujah chorus each time I walked into my quiet home after dropping them off. Interesting how you don’t mind waking early to drop kids off when you know there’s a whopping 3 hours of quiet time immediately following! And that small, but awesome, chunk of time is not nearly enough to start any cleaning projects. No, no. That’s the beauty of it.
Back to this week…
Now, people – I realize I am not a young teeny bopper anymore helping out at Vacation Bible School. Not even my young, newly married years self. But 30′s, granted late 30′s, should not produce such feeble and frail feelings. I mean I birthed my last babes at home. I have some pain tolerance experience. It’s a miracle I’m in the upright position as I write at this very minute.
Think we need to amp up the snacks next year. At least provide the volunteers with protein-packed granola bars or bags of mixed nuts, something. I’m dying here friends. The last three days are gonna be a struggle!
As the Pastor’s wife I don’t feel at liberty to discuss some of the already numerous hilarious AND scary stories of our first two days (though I would love to, trust me). So will you please share some of your most memorable VBS stories with me? Or ways in which you share my pain?? Of this summer or summers past. Doesn’t matter. Do tell any and ALL. No details left behind.
Don’t worry. No one from your church will know it’s you commenting…

My Emma absolutely adores VBS, this is her second year…she is 4. I have to say that I love having the few hours alone with my baby, even though I am freaking out dropping her off at MY church…the one I went to VBS at growing up. I love VBS, but I don’t like how my baby comes home completely sugared up, ready to crash, and cranky. Is it only me? Please tell me someone else out there has this same experience?! I almost didn’t send her this year because i was afraid what the “pink water” was going to do to her! :-) But, I love everything else about VBS, especially the assembly at the end of the week where I can watch my daughter get her groove on :-)
Um, yeah. The questionable “punch” and sugar-loaded snacks are enough to do any parent in at pick-up. Even hours later. I am packing my older son some salty snacks each day to go alongside the cookies. He just can’t handle the sugar. And I bring pretzels and such for the class I help teach (pre-K/ K range) to help soak up their sugar doses as well!
I so wish I was loving our vbs this year. Not so much. At least it’s motivating people to want to volunteer and make next year really fun.
Our VBS is at night from 6-9pm. And I must admit that since our daughter was only in the nursery, I went, helped register kids and then took her home and put her to bed. I still got to help out and I learned some new names (because I still don’t know everyone after a year) but our kiddo didn’t end up completely exhausted from staying up until 9:30 or 10.
Ooooo, now that’s win/win for you! Can’t beat it. And I like evening vbs. Our kids LOVED attending the nighttime vbs near our last home.
VBS week for us, too! I know what you mean about that feeling of getting up early to drop off. It’s a real blessing to have time with my second-born for a bit each day while my firstborn is at church gulping down sugar…and Bible verses. :)
It was so weird for me to have just my youngest babe home last week. I haven’t had much “alone time” with him as a toddler. Almost didn’t know what to do! And apparently I’m not near as much fun to play dinosaurs with as his older siblings.
This was my son’s first VBS, and I have to admit, it was crazy overwhelming when we walked in. Luckily, he’s pretty good about trying new things, because otherwise I don’t think I could have pried him off me. Hope the week goes well!
VBS IS crazy overwhelming. Unfortunately. So glad your son has some thick skin and wasn’t scared off too quickly! My younger daughter wanted to attend with her bro and sis when she was 3. So we let her try. It took a day or two for her to really go in, and this church had a wonderful 3′s class. But she only lasted an hour, barely, and was bawling for someone to call us. Poor thing.
This year was a breeze. They change soooo much in a year!!
Hooray for a fellow Christian blogger! I’m ashamed to admit that though my oldest is seven, I have yet to brave the VBS!
So nice meeting you! Thans for your visits!
Regarding vbs: sometimes ya just have to take it with a grain of salt… Ugh. Our week was rough. It’s hit or miss. Don’t feel bad. You may be saving yourself from some extra headaches!! My kids loved vbs the week before, though. It was a definite hit!
Some day we’ll give it a try. :)
